Sanjay Manjrekar’s Brief Reminder Of His Role As Gautam Gambhir Takes On His New Role As India’s Coach

According to former Indian cricket player Sanjay Manjrekar, Indian cricket as a whole, not the coach, is what won the team’s four World Cups.

Social media dispute was sparked by former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar’s peculiar comments regarding the Indian team’s coaches. There’s no ‘direct association’ between a coach and a side winning the World Cup, according to Manjrekar, who made this suggestion just before Gautam Gambhir takes up his position as leader of the Indian men’s national team. On the contrary, Manjrekar opined that the success or failure of a team is mostly dependent on Indian cricket and its operational mechanisms.

In 1983, India won the ODI World Cup for the first time without a formal head coach. After that, the team had two extraordinarily prosperous runs under MS Dhoni’s leadership (albeit he had different coaches in 2007 and 2011).

India overcame their 11-year ICC title drought and won the T20 World Cup 2024 title in Barbados under Dravid’s guidance. When India lost to Australia in the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals last year, they also came dangerously near on two other occasions.

Manjrekar wants the players, not the coach, to be the center of attention as Gambhir attempts to assemble a team capable of competing against other elite teams in the world at the ICC Champions Trophy (2025), ICC World Test Championship final (2025), and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Dravid, Lalchand Rajput, Gary Kirsten, and no coach. coaches for India’s World Cup victories in 1983, 2007, 2011, and 2023. It isn’t so much about the coach as it is about Indian cricket. It’s time we stopped believing that there is a clear relationship “On X, Manjrekar wrote.

Considering the time of the post, several admirers criticized Manjrekar on social media.
Later in the day, Gambhir’s maiden coaching job will begin in Sri Lanka when India, captained by Suryakumar Yadav, takes on the hosts in the opening Twenty20 international of the three-match series in Pallekele.
