On Saturday, Indian batter Sanju Samson overtook late Australian icon Shane Warne as the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain with the most victories in the Indian Premier League (IPL). At Mullanpur, Samson achieved this milestone as his team defeated the Punjab Kings (PBKS). Samson’s 32nd victory as RR captain surpassed Warne’s 31 victories. From 2008 to 2011, Warne captained RR, winning 31 games and losing 24.Since taking over as RR’s leader in 2021, Samson has won 32 games, lost 29, and had one match end in a draw. He guided RR to the 2024 playoffs after finishing second to the Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2022.
An 89-run partnership between Sanju Samson (38 in 26 balls, with six fours) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (67 in 45 balls, with three fours and five sixes) got things going for RR after PBKS won the toss and chose to bowl first. RR reached 205/4 in 20 overs thanks to cameos from Shimron Hetmyer (20 in 12 balls, with two fours and a six) and Riyan Parag (43* in 25 balls, with three fours and three sixes).For PBKS, Lockie Ferguson (2/37) was the best bowler. Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh both took one wicket.
Jofra Archer cut PBKS to 43/4 during the run-chase (3/25). But PBKS had hope thanks to an 88-run partnership between Glenn Maxwell (30 in 21 balls, with three fours and a six) and Nehal Wadhera (62 in 41 balls, with five fours and three sixes). However, PBKS lost focus and severely missed bounds following their dismissals. Sandeep Sharma (2/21) and Maheesh Theekshana (2/26) provided excellent bowling support, limiting PBKS to 155/9 in 20 overs.
