In spite of Rajasthan Royals defeating Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 match on Monday, Sanju Samson submitted to MS Dhoni, the “finisher.”

Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR), remarked that a side is “never safe with MS Dhoni” because “nothing works against him” after his team’s three-run victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match. In a thrilling finish to a nail-biting game, Sandeep Sharma narrowly held off CSK’s 21 runs in the last over as RR prevailed by 3 runs at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday.

“You have to give credit to the boys.” The bowlers kept their calm at the finish and bowled exceptionally effectively, and we also hung on to our catches. I don’t have fond recollections of Chepauk, I’ve never won here, and I really wanted to win tonight. We brought in Zampa as an impact player because the ball was gripping. We had a good powerplay with Rutu coming out, and the notion was that if we can get out of the powerplay without giving too much away, we have the spinners to do the job.

I attempted to force it deep in the final two overs, but you’re never safe with ‘That Guy’ (Dhoni). You have to appreciate that person and what he’s capable of. “Nothing works against him,” Samson stated following the match.

RR now leads the standings after winning three of their four matches. They have six points in total. CSK is in fifth place with two wins, two defeats, and four points.

In the match, RR scored 175/8 in 20 overs after being sent to bat first by CSK. After Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) fell early, Jos Buttler (52 off 36 balls, one four and three sixes) and Devdutt Paddikal (38 off 26 balls, five boundaries) put on a 77-run partnership for the second wicket. Ravichandran Ashwin (30 in 22 balls, one four and two sixes) and Shimron Hetmyer (30* in 18 balls, one four and two sixes) batted in the middle order to help RR to a competitive total.

CSK’s bowler of choice was Ravindra Jadeja (2/21). Tushar Deshpande (2/37) and Akash Singh (2/40) each claimed two wickets but allowed runs to be scored. In his two overs, Moeen Ali took 1/21.

CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad for eight runs early in the 176-run chase. Ajinkya Rahane (31 off 19 balls with two fours and a six) and Devon Conway added 68 runs. Conway went on to score 50 in 38 balls, including six fours, but he had no help from the other end.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja sought to win it for the side with CSK at 113/6 in 15 overs but came three runs short. CSK concluded their 20 overs at 172/6, with Dhoni (32* off 17 balls, one four and three sixes) and Jadeja (25* in 15 balls, one four and two sixes) stitching a 59-run seventh-wicket partnership.

RR’s bowlers of choice were Ashwin (2/25) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/27). Adam Zampa and Sandeep Sharma both grabbed a wicket. Ashwin was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his all-around effort.
