Tiwary led Jharkhand, appeared in three ODIs for India, and represented four IPL (Indian Premier League) franchises across a 17-year career.
Tiwary, 34, announced his retirement from all formats of the game following the Ranji Trophy encounter against Rajasthan, saying it was an opportune time for him to make the choice since he wanted to make room for the younger players even though he still had cricket in him.
“I believe that if you are unable to make it to the national team or the IPL, it is best to make room for talented young players,” Tiwary remarked during a press conference held at the JSCA office on the grounds of Keenan Stadium.
When asked about his future ambitions, Tiwary stated, “I have gotten everything from Jharkhand and politics is the appropriate platform to give back to the state.”
However, he later stated that he will not enter politics and rather to remain affiliated with cricket.
He also stated that Jharkhand has a lot of talent, but the young people need proper facilities to compete with other states.
Tiwary scored 49 runs in three ODIs for his country in 2010. He scored 8,030 runs in 189 innings at an average of 47.51, including 22 hundreds and 34 fifties in 115 First-Class games.
In 93 IPL appearances, he scored 1,494 runs at an average of 28.73 and a strike rate of 120. In 181 T20 appearances, he scored 3,454 runs, including 16 fifties, at an average of 29.02 and a strike rate of 122.17.
Tiwary has played four Ranji Trophy games for Jharkhand, which is not in contention for a place in the knockout stages.
Tiwary made his First-Class debut in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy season, having started his cricketing career at the age of 11 years. He was a member of the Indian U-19 World Cup winning side in 2008, which was led by former India captain Virat Kohli.
Additionally, he has led Jharkhand 88 times in all formats, with 36 victories, 33 defeats, and 19 draws.
Tiwary averaged 46.55 while scoring 4,050 runs in 116 games during his List A career, including 27 fifties and six hundreds. In 2021, he made his final IPL appearance for the Mumbai Indians.
