With her glittering career coming to a conclusion, Serena Williams lost the WTA/ATP Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday after falling to US Open winner Emma Raducanu in straight sets.
Williams, who announced last week that she intends to retire after the US Open this month, was no match for British teenager Raducanu, who romped to a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Williams, 40, quickly departed the court after losing without speaking to television reporters and skipping a press conference.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion was broken by Raducanu at the start of both sets to win their first and perhaps final encounter.
Raducanu admitted, “I was anxious from the very beginning to the very end.” Serena is dangerous and capable of recovering from any circumstance. I had to keep my attention. I’m so happy that I was able to maintain my cool.
