Shubman Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans, has been fined Rs 24 lakh for keeping a sluggish over rate against the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. As a result of his team’s second over rate offense of the season, the remaining 11 players—including the Impact Player—were each fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their individual match fees, whichever was lower. To survive in the IPL, GT upset CSK, the reigning champions, by 35 runs on Friday.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan contributed hundreds to GT’s score of 231 for three before limiting CSK to 196 for eight.
The Titans are now eighth in the points table, with 10 points from 12 games, while CSK remains fourth despite the setback, with 12 points from the same number of matches.
Gill, who struck 104 off 55 balls, had a 210-run opening partnership with fellow centurion B Sai Sudharsan (103 off 51 balls) in Gujarat’s total of 231 for 3, which could easily have exceeded 260 runs.
Finally, CSK scored 196, and Gujarat’s NRR improved to -1.063. They have 10 points from 12 games, with a potential of reaching 14, which may not be enough for play-off qualification.
“To be honest, at one point, 250 was available, but we fell short. They bowled well in the final two or three overs. “I thought we were 10-15 short, not in terms of the game, but in terms of net run rate,” Gill stated at the post-match presentation ceremony.
He left the field early during the CSK pursuit as Rahul Tewatia led the team, but he assured everyone that it was only cramping.
“It’s just a cramp, nothing more.” Regarding his opening stand of 210 runs with Sudharsan, Gill expressed his admiration for the unrestricted way in which they executed their shots. Gill achieved six maximums and Sudharsan one additional.
“Enjoyed the flexibility of our cooperation with Sudharsan; instead of setting goals, we made the most of every chance that came our way. We run the twos together, get along well, and have a strong sense of camaraderie. It is unquestionably [our best opening partnerships] in terms of numbers.”
