Shubman Gill is set to replace Indian opener KL Rahul in the playing XI for the third Test against Australia in Indore, which begins on March 1.
Rahul was stripped of the vice-captaincy after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) failed to name a replacement for Rohit Sharma for the final two Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests.
Because of his recent string of low scores, the 30-year-spot old’s in the lineup has been under scrutiny for some time.
Rahul has scored 38 runs in the first two Tests of the series while averaging only 17.13 in four red-ball games for India in 2022. In Rohit’s absence, Rahul led the team in a series in Bangladesh in December, but Gill made an impression with his debut century as the Gujarat Titans (GT) opener scored 114 in Mirpur in the second game.
Gill has since lit up the international stage with dominant performances in limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in January. He hit a double century against the Kiwis and also hit his first T20I century against them in Ahmedabad. Many expected the Punjab opener to retain his place in the XI after that, but he was beaten by Rohit when the skipper returned to the fold in the ongoing series.
