After the team’s dismal performance at the ongoing 50-over Champions Trophy event in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, Jos Buttler resigned last week.
Rob Key, the head of cricket for England, stated on Thursday that “it would be stupid” to exclude Test captain Ben Stokes from consideration for the position of captain of the struggling white-ball team. After his team lost all three of its group matches in the ongoing 50-over Champions Trophy event in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, Jos Buttler resigned last week due to the team’s subpar performance.
As of right moment, England has lost 10 of its 11 white-ball matches this season.
Buttler’s successor apparent had seemed to be vice captain Harry Brook, but he is expected to be a mainstay in all three international forms, which will result in a heavy workload.
One of Key’s possibilities, as the managing director for men’s cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board, is to broaden Stokes’s scope.Since taking over as Test captain from Joe Root, the 33-year-old Durham all-rounder has shown himself to be an inspirational leader.
However, he has primarily functioned as a Test specialist for 16 months due to his age and injury issues.
By being named limited-overs captain, Stokes would be continuing his “Bazball” partnership with Brendon McCullum, who now coaches England’s white-ball sides and leads the Test team.
