Tania Sachdev, an Indian chess player, wrote to Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Arvind Kejriwal, expressing her unhappiness at the lack of acknowledgment.
Some athletes are unhappy with the lack of acknowledgement they receive from state governments, even if chess continues to bring India international acclaim. Tania Sachdev is one such athlete who made the decision to express her annoyance at the Delhi government’s persistent lack of response. In a harsh post on X (previously Twitter), Tania said that even though she has been playing chess for India since 2008, the Delhi government has not acknowledged her. She also brought up her accomplishments from the 2022 Chess Olympiad to the political leaders. In 2024, she also took home a gold medal at the Olympics in chess.
“Having played for India since 2008 It’s disheartening to see a lack of recognition from the Delhi government for achievements in chess. States that support and celebrate their champions, directly inspire excellence and motivate talent. Sadly, Delhi has yet to take this step.”
I returned from the 2022 Chess Olympiad with an individual medal and a historic team bronze. The state government is yet to acknowledge the historic Olympic gold in chess, which was won two years later in 2024. As a proud representative of Delhi and India, I wish @AamAadmiParty @AtishiAAP ma’am @ArvindKejriwal sir see value in supporting their chess athletes,” Tania posted on X.
