Prior to the 2025 player auction, which will take place later this year, each of the ten IPL franchisees is permitted to keep up to six cricket players, regardless of their nationality and includes one player who is uncapped.
The IPL Governing Council met here on Saturday and decided on the player retention rules. However, the IPL authorities have developed a philosophy of “pay more to retain more,” in contrast to previous years.
Six players can be retained by the IPL teams from their current roster. The Right to Match (RTM) option or retention can be used for this, according to a media statement from BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
“The IPL franchise has the freedom to select the combination of RTMs and Retentions. A maximum of 5 capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players may be included in the 6 retentions/RTMs.In his words, the auction purse, which was set at Rs. 120 crore for a team, will be lowered by Rs. 18 crore, Rs. 14 crore, and Rs. 11 crore for the first three retentions. It will cost more to maintain the other two retentions than the third, though.
Rs. 18 crore and Rs. 14 crore, respectively, will be subtracted from the fourth and fifth retentions.
With only Rs. 45 crore in its coffers for the IPL auction, a team will see its auction budget slashed by an incredible Rs. 75 crore on five players. One uncapped player, such as Indian cricketers who haven’t played for their country in five years, may be retained for an additional Rs. 4 crore in purse reductions above and above these five retentions.
The uncapped rule was validated by the BCCI statement, allowing Mahendra Singh Dhoni of the Chennai Super Kings to continue playing without a cap.
The IPL GC implemented strict restrictions in an effort to stop foreign players from playing in the IPL based only on their whims and fancies.
“To participate in the Big Auction, an overseas player must register. The BCCI declared that if the foreign player does not register, he will not be allowed to register for the player auction the next year.”Players who sign up for the player auction and, after being selected, withdraw from the player auction prior to the start of the season will be prohibited from both the player auction and the tournament for a period of two seasons.”
The 12 players participating in the league stage will now pay match fees of Rs. 7.5 lakh each, according to the GC. The payment will be in addition to the player’s contract fees.
