Sania Mirza announced her retirement last week and played her final match at the Australian Open.
The first-ever Women’s Premier League is set to begin on March 4, 2023, with five teams competing for the prestigious silverware. While each franchise had a successful auction on February 13, forming a strong team for the inaugural competition, each team also has a strong set of coaching units.
On February 15, Wednesday, the Royal Challengers Bangalore named Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza as their WPL 2023 mentor. Sania has been a role model for women in sports, inspiring many young girls to participate in sports and sporting activities. Sania Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion who recently retired from the sport, is the recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan, Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, and Padma Shri.
On Wednesday morning, RCB announced the same on their official social media accounts. She said of being appointed as the women’s team’s mentor
“I was a little surprised, but I am really excited because I think that, you know I have been a professional athlete for 20 years which is very depressing sometimes when I think of it because it’s so long. But I feel like my next job, once I retire, will be to try to convince young women and girls that sport can be one of their first career options.”
“And for me, the kind of things I went through 30 years ago when I picked up a Tennis racquet to play the sport, which was kind of unheard of at the time, I just want to help the next generation believe in themselves that no matter how many odds are against you, you can achieve your goal if you back yourself,” she added.
