Chandika Hathurusingha claimed that the country lacks a quality T20 event and launched a scathing attack on the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Bangladesh cricket team head coach Chandika Hathurusingha claimed that the country lacks a meaningful T20 tournament and went on a tirade over the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The T20 tournament is presently underway, however in a recent interview with ESPNCricinfo, Hathurusingha stated that he occasionally switches off the TV while watching the matches, and even went on to say that some players in the league are not of the “required class”. He went on to say that the International Cricket Council (ICC) needed to step in and put an end to the ‘circus’, as he described the BPL.
“We (Bangladesh) do not have a proper T20 tournament. This sounds strange. When I’m watching the BPL, I occasionally turn off the TV. Some players aren’t even from the [necessary] class. “I have a serious problem with the current system,” Hathurusingha stated.
“The International Criminal Court should take action. There has to be some rules. A participant participates in one tournament before moving on to another. It resembles a circus. Players will discuss opportunities, but that is not acceptable. People will eventually lose interest. “I’ve lost interest,” Hathurusingha said.
Hathurusingha also stated that Bangladesh players do not receive enough practice in critical areas such as batting in the top three and bowling death overs. He proposed holding another event prior of the BPL to aid in the development of local players.
“We need a tournament where our athletes may compete for top three hitting positions. Bangladesh’s bowlers bowl in the dying moments. Where else would we learn these things? “We only have one tournament,” stated Hathurusingha.
“My suggestion is to hold another event before the BPL. Franchisees do whatever they want. Some of the best players aren’t participating. How do you expect Bangladesh to compete with the other teams? “I am fighting a difficult battle,” Hathurusingha added.
