According to a PTI report, the International Cricket Council lost roughly USD 20 million (Rs 167 crore) by staging the T20 World Cup 2024 games in the United States. According to the source, it will be one of the main themes discussed during the ICC Annual Conference in Colombo, which begins on Friday. While the matter is not on the nine-point agenda for the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the report stated that it will be reviewed as a “post-event report.” A significant portion of the event was held in the United States, including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan in New York.

The replacement of Greg Barclay as ICC chairman by BCCI secretary Jay Shah will also be a significant topic of discussion during the AGM. One of the primary topics of concern for all ICC attendees, according to an ICC source quoted in the PTI story, is Shah’s assumption of leadership of the global organization.

“The question is not how, but when; he has one more year left as BCCI secretary before his constitutionally mandated cooling-off time with the Indian board begins in 2025. Barclay cannot, however, serve out his third two-year term from December 2024 to December 2026 if he must assume office in 2025, according to the ICC source.”There is a school of thought that what if ICC’s chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years.”

It is generally accepted that Shah can serve his full six-year term as BCCI secretary and assume the chairmanship of the ICC in 2025, during which he will be cooling off from the BCCI, if Barclay’s present tenure is extended to three years. He can then return and assume the role of board president in 2028.
