Playing age-group cricket in Punjab together as children, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma have a close bond.

Following their IPL 2024 match’s cancellation on Thursday, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Abhishek Sharma reminisced about a sweet childhood memory. Gill proceeded to welcome Abhishek’s mother, Manju, and sister, Komal, in the stands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, as the rain stopped the players from playing and allowed SRH to advance to the playoffs. Gill bowed to touch Abhishek’s mother’s feet, then shook hands and smiled warmly at Komal.

Social media users are sharing Gill’s touching gesture for Abhishek’s mother and sister.

Both played together at the 2018 U-19 World Cup, which India won in New Zealand under the direction of Prithvi Shaw. They also made their respective First Class debuts for Punjab during the 2017 season.
After totaling 372 runs, Gill was crowned “Player of the Tournament.” Afterwards, Abhishek’s and Gill’s professional paths have diverged.
While Abhishek hasn’t played for the senior team yet, Gill made his India debut in 2020 and went on to become a regular member across all formats.

Despite discussions over Abhishek’s potential inclusion for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, the selectors chose to stay with the players who had already represented India because of his outstanding performance in the IPL 2024.

As Yashasvi Jaiswal took Gill’s spot at the top, even Gill was left out of the 15-man roster. On the other hand, the GT captain is one of the four backup players who will go to the Americas with the team.

SRH moved up to third place in the standings with 15 points after the washout on Thursday saw both teams earn a point apiece.

GT had been eliminated from the play-off race earlier this week after their game against the Kolkata Knight Riders was also abadoned due to rain.

The weather in Hyderabad on Thursday disappointed thousands of spectators at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

More than two and a half hours after its original start time, the game was ultimately called off.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings, who are fourth, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are leading the race for the final playoff position.
