Tennis drew closer to the conclusion of a brilliant era as Roger Federer and Serena Williams announced their retirement from the sport.
Following Williams’ tearful farewell at the US Open earlier this month, Federer revealed on Thursday that the Laver Cup in London the following week would be his final competitive appearance.
With 43 Grand Slam singles victories between them, both players had elevated their sport to new heights and were acknowledged as the greatest racket handlers in history.
Fans are left yearning for a golden time in the history of the sport as a result of their departures and the advancing years of Federer’s great adversaries Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Given his previous troubles with injury and form, the 41-year-old Federer’s decision was not shocking, but tennis fans and past players expressed their regret nonetheless.
