The dates for the inaugural Women’s Premier League have been confirmed by India’s Board of Control for Cricket, and all five franchises have been informed.
The Women’s Premier League will take place between March 4 and March 26. The BCCI confirmed that the first season would be held entirely at two Mumbai stadiums, Brabourne Stadium and D.Y Patil Stadium. On Monday, February 6, all of these critical details were sent to the five WPL franchises via email.
The Women’s Premier League is just around the corner, and every cricket fan on the planet is excited about the new era of women’s cricket. The WPL has already garnered attention for becoming the most valuable competition in women’s cricket, based on the income from the acquisition of broadcast and franchise ownership rights.
On January 16, 2023, the BCCI announced that it had sold the WPL media rights to Viacom for INR 951 crore from 2023 to 2027. It also sold the five franchises on January 25 for a total of INR 4669.99 crore.
In the email, BCCI CEO Hemang Amin also announced that the player auction will take place on February 13 in Mumbai. Amin announced that 1500 people had signed up and that the final list would be released later this week. A maximum of 90 cricketers may be purchased at the auction, with each squad consisting of 15 to 18 players.
The Women’s Premier League will begin on March 4, 2023, eight days after the Women’s T20 World Cup, which concludes on February 26 in South Africa. The BCCI chose to limit the first season to Mumbai in order to reduce logistical challenges for South African players and coaches travelling to India.
Furthermore, the WPL auction will take place three days after the start of the Women’s T20 World Cup on February 10. The franchises would be looking forward to those games in order to add the best players to their roster.
