The World’s First Transgender International Cricketer Retires Following ICC Decision

The decision follows a significant modification to the ICC’s gender eligibility standards, which barred transgender athletes from competing in women’s internationals.

Danielle McGahey, the first transgender woman to play international cricket, has declared her retirement. The decision follows a significant modification to the ICC’s gender eligibility standards, which barred transgender athletes from competing in women’s internationals. McGahey has appeared in six Twenty20 Internationals for Canada, scoring 118 runs at an average of 19.66 and a strike rate of 95.93. However, with the ICC prohibiting transgender women from appearing, the 29-year-old has decided to call it quits.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the end of my international cricketing career as a result of the ICC’s decision this morning.” It had to end as swiftly as it had begun. It is founded on the following values (in descending order of priority): “protection of the integrity of the women’s game, safety, fairness, and inclusion,” the ICC said in a statement. “The regulations will be reviewed within the next two years,” McGahey said on Instagram, according to news reports.

McGahey, on the other hand, stated that she will continue to fight for transgender women’s equality in sports.

“While I hold my opinions on the ICC’s decision, they are irrelevant,” McGahey said in a statement. “What matters is the message being sent to millions of trans women today: we don’t belong.” I vow I will not stop pushing for equality in our sport; we deserve to participate at the greatest level, and we pose no threat to the sport’s integrity or safety,” he continued.

McGahey, who was born in Australia, relocated to Canada in 2020 before having a male-to-female medical transition in 2021.

McGahey’s batting achievements in the nation’s women’s interprovincial tournament caught the eye of selectors from Cricket Canada, and she was rewarded for her efforts during the Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier earlier this year.
