On Day 3 of the third Test, Sunil Gavaskar was devastated by Virat Kohli’s dismissal against Australia.
The legendary Sunil Gavaskar of India rarely minces his thoughts. Gavaskar was quick to criticize Virat Kohli’s poor shot selection as the Indian batsman left the field after just managing three runs in the first innings of the third Test match against Australia. Even though the ball was far from the stumps, Kohli, facing Josh Hazlewood, edged it into Australia’s wicket-keeper Alex Carey’s hands. In a direct attack on Kohli, Gavaskar claimed that he didn’t need to play the seventh or eighth stump delivery.Following Virat’s dismissal for a single-figure score on Monday, Gavaskar stated on Channel 7 that “I could understand if it was on the fourth stump.”
“You could say that this was wide, on the seventh or eighth stump. “That doesn’t need to be played,” he continued.
Given how much India wanted him to perform a big knock on the day and the fact that Australia had scored 445 runs, Gavaskar believes that Kohli will be deeply dissatisfied with the way he was dismissed.
Gavaskar even believed that Kohli lacked the patience needed to succeed on the challenging surface of The Gabba. He would be furious and quite disappointed by that. The rain began to pour and the covers were pulled up even before Rishabh Pant had to face a ball. Gavaskar claimed that if Kohli had been a little more patient, he wouldn’t have gone out with KL Rahul.
Outside of the off-stump, one of the main causes of Kohli’s difficulties has been the allure of playing cover drives. Even during India’s net sessions, Kohli has been working hard on how to handle deliveries that are outside-off. It has been difficult for him to control his instincts during the game, though. In order to handle this complex situation, several commentators have suggested that Kohli emulate Sachin Tendulkar, particularly on Australian fields where the balls bounce more than usual.
