Vinesh Phogat is one step closer to immortal Olympic glory after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez on Tuesday to go to the Women’s 50kg Freestyle final in Paris.The ace Indian defeated the reigning Pan-American champion 5-0.With her victory, Phogat secures a medal finish for India and becomes the first Indian female wrestler to challenge for gold in an Olympic final.

Both wrestlers began the battle quietly, wrestling away at each other but taking it slowly and carefully so as not to give up any cheap points early on.Guzman continued to target Phogat’s legs, but neither the Cuban nor the Indian found any room to steal points, and both wrestlers headed into the halftime break with Phogat up 1-0.

Phogat was struck with a passive shotclock as she entered action for the remainder of the time. But, unlike Guzman, Phogat burst, pinning the Cuban at will to take four more points, increasing her lead to 5-0 with less than a minute remaining.Guzman’s efforts would ultimately be in vain, giving Phogat the victory.In the opening round of the Women’s 50kg Freestyle competition at the Olympics in Paris, Phogat—who has been embroiled in a plethora of controversy for the past year—sunk Yui Susaki, the reigning world champion from Japan.

The top-seeded Japanese player Susaki, who did not give up a single point on her way to her hold during the Tokyo Games in 2020, suffered her first-ever loss in international circuits thanks to her victory.

In the 50kg Women’s Freestyle quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Paris Olympics, Phogat defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine, extending her incredible run in the competition.Phogat surgically defeated Livach 7–5 to guarantee her place in the semifinals, showcasing her skill and attention to detail.
