After RCB defeated DC in the WPL 2024 final to snap their title drought, Virat Kohli contacted Smriti Mandhana.
When Faf du Plessis mispronounced the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) slogan “Ee Sala Cup Namde” (This year the cup is ours) as “Ee Sala Cup Nahi” the previous year, Virat Kohli broke down in tears. For the first time in their illustrious cricketing history, the Indian team won the trophy a year later. Smriti Mandhana’s Bangalore team defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final on Sunday, snapping RCB’s trophy-less run in franchise cricket.
Arun Jaitley Stadium hosted the WPL trophy presentation for RCB, following which Kohli praised Mandhana and her team over a video chat. Following his video chat to the captain of the RCB, batting legend Virat Kohli went on Instagram and gave a notable post for the “superwomen” of Banaglore. Fans on social media quickly took to Kohli’s post and his conversation. Star RCB Glenn Maxwell and renowned West Indies opener Chris Gayle were also very supportive of the Bangalore-based team’s women’s unit.
Shreyanka Patil of the RCB emerged as the player of the match, taking four wickets as DC was bowled out for 113 in 18.3 overs. RCB defeated DC by eight wickets despite Lanning’s successful attempt to extend the match to the final over. This was made possible by Ellyse Perry’s unbeaten 35 from 37 balls. Captain Mandhana (31) and Sophie Devine (32) both contributed with significant hits to help RCB win their first-ever WPL title, even though Perry stayed undefeated.
