The Indian men’s cricket team will be in the midst of their last-ditch preparation for the ODI World Cup, having just completed their home game against five-time champions Australia, when the Asian Games event kicks off in China. With normal head coach Rahul Dravid in Chennai with the Rohit Sharma-led team for World Cup preparations, the BCCI is expected to send batting icon and National Cricket Academy chairman VVS Laxman to Hangzhou, China, to lead the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Team India.
After being omitted from the 2018 Asian Games, cricket is returning for the third time in history, with India sending their men’s squad for the first time.
The women’s team will play in cricket beginning on September 19 at the Asian Games 2022. India will start from the quarterfinal round with the final on the 26th due to their ICC ranking in the format. The men’s competition will start on September 28 and end on October 7, the day before Rohit and company face Australia in their World Cup opener. The men’s division will have 15 teams, while the women’s category will feature nine teams. The seeds for each group are determined by their ICC rankings as of June 1, 2023.
Laxman, who is now in charge of a high-performance programme for India’s up-and-coming athletes in Bengaluru, will travel to China with the men’s Asian Games team as their head coach, according to a story in the Times of India. Sairaj Bahutule, a former India leg-spinner, will serve as his bowling coach, and Munish Bali, a fielding coach, will be part of his support team.
The women’s team’s support personnel was revealed
Former all-rounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar will serve as the India women’s team’s interim head coach. Rajib Dutta, a coach for bowling, and Subhadeep Ghosh, a coach for fielding, will be on his support staff.
