Prior to the IPL big auction, the Lucknow Super Giants plan to hire former India fast Zaheer Khan as their mentor. The 45-year-old left-arm bowler returns to the IPL after being with the five-time champions Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022. On Wednesday, the RPSG Group Headquarters in Kolkata will have a formal launching. “Zaheer has been appointed as team mentor and the unveiling will happen later today,” sources close to PTI claimed.
So, when Gautam Gambhir left to join his old team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, last year, Zaheer will step up to fill the void and lead them to the 2024 IPL championship. The Indian head coach at the moment is Gambhir.
Prior to becoming the head of worldwide development at the Mumbai Indians, Zaheer was the team’s director of cricket.
With South African quick Morne Morkel joining Gambhir’s coaching staff, LSG did not have a bowling coach at the moment.
Zaheer is expected to participate in player-development initiatives and scouting over the off-season.Three IPL teams—the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, and Royal Challengers Bangalore—were represented by Zaheer prior to his coaching career.
With an economy rate of 7.58, Zaheer took 102 wickets in 100 games over ten seasons with these teams.
When he captained the Delhi Daredevils in the 2017 Indian Premier League, it was his last IPL game. He then left cricket altogether.
With Lance Klusener and Adam Voges serving as his deputies, LSG’s head coach Justin Langer, an Australian, took over for Andy Flower before to the most recent IPL season.
