After a 1-1 draw with the Go Ahead Eagles the previous weekend, Groningen was demoted, ending a 23-year tenure in the elite Eredivisie.

Smoke bombs were hurled onto the pitch during Ajax’s match against Groningen, who had just been demoted.

Groningen’s 23-year tenure in the top-tier Eredivisie came to an end last weekend following a 1-1 draw with the Go Ahead Eagles.

Fans started tossing pyrotechnics onto the playing field shortly after the game on Sunday begun. This caused the referee to stop play and remove the players from the field for around 15 minutes.

After the game restarted, fireworks were still being thrown, so it was quickly abandoned.

When Feyenoord won the championship on Sunday, Ajax was fourth in the rankings. Players then stepped outside to thank the away fans.

Former Everton player Davy Klaassen was injured last month during the Dutch Cup semifinal match between Ajax and Feyenoord after being struck in the head by an item thrown from the crowd.
