Vinesh Phogat defeated Sweden’s Emma Jonna Malmgren to earn the bronze medal in the 53kg weight class on Wednesday, making history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to take home two medals from the World Championships.

A bronze medal was also won by Vinesh, 28, at the 2019 competition in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

After losing in the first round, Vinesh made an incredible comeback to defeat Malmgren 8-0 in the bronze medal match.

After losing to Mongolia’s Khulan Batkhuyag on Tuesday in her opening match, who went on to win the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Championships, she advanced to the bronze play-off via the repechage round.

After Batkhuyag made it to the final, Vinesh, a three-time Commonwealth Games champion, advanced to the repechage round.

Vinesh advanced to the bronze medal round in the repechage round after first defeating Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan in a decision by Victory by Fall (4-0) and then winning the following match after Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan was hurt.
